How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Since the genesis of tattoos themselves people have been saddled with tattoo regret and sought to have their tattoos removed. In the past tattoos were surgically shaved, scraped, frozen off, or peeled away with chemicals. The process was incredibly painful and had side effects including undesirable scarring.
Laser treatments started in the 1980s and have only continued to advance. Tattoo ink often contain heavy metals such as copper, lead, manganese and even mercury. These heavy metals are what makes tattoos permanent.

Naturally, your immune system tries to remove tattoo ink by dispatching white blood cells to remove the ink particles by escorting the ink particles to the liver where they would be filtered out and excreted, however, ink particles tend to be much larger than white blood cells and therefore your immune system is unable to filter them away.
What the laser treatment succeeds in doing is breaking up the ink particles which makes them small enough to be naturally removed by your immune system.
Kind words from our happy clients
The cost of tattoo removal will vary and is reliant on a number of factors. At our Sydney Tattoo Removal Clinic, we determine the price of your tattoo removal by measuring the saturated area of ink. The ink saturation levels will determine the both the price of the removal and how many sessions you'll need to remove it. If you'd like to get an idea of how much your individual tattoo removal will cost per session before you come to visit our Sydney tattoo removal clinic you can request an online evaluation by sending us a photo of your tattoo for an initial assessment.
Every tattoo we see at our clinic is unique and requires an specific and individualised course of treatment, however, as a rough guide we can tell you that small tattoos (4cm squared) start from around $90 and a significant procedure like a complete removal of a half sleeve would cost you approximately $580.
In many Clinics, a Q-Switched Laser Tattoo Removal system is common however, the most exclusive, most advanced machinery in this sphere is the Discover Pico Plus. What distinguishes the Discovery Pico laser from other lasers is that it emits fast pulses of light energy as opposed to a continuous beam which can result in burning.
Further to this, the Discovery Pico Plus operates at a picosecond which is literally one trillionth of a second. The Q-Switched system is a slower machine.
This picosecond laser, thanks to its shorter pulse durations and high peak power can effectively pulverize even the deepest skin pigments and large spots.
Most people wonder whether laser tattoo removal hurts but the good news here is that most people who have experienced laser tattoo removal say that the level of pain and discomfort they felt was not dissimilar to the amount of pain they felt getting the tattoo in the first place. Our clients typically find the procedure mildly uncomfortable and describe the feeling as being like having a rubber band snapped against their skin. Tattoo removal at our Sydney clinic is typically done in short sessions that take less than five minutes to complete so, even if you do experience discomfort, you won't be in pain for long.
In short, if you can handle the pain of getting a tattoo you can handle the pain of tattoo removal. Although uncomfortable it is in no way unbearable and it's worth it for the results at the end of the day.
At our Sydney Tattoo Removal Clinic, we're always aiming to remove your tattoos completely. We take pride in the fact that the gentlemen that come to our Sydney clinic are always satisfied with the results we offer.
Although we aim to have tattoos removed completely, some tattoos are harder to remove than others. For example, older or amateur 'stick and poke' tattoos are far easier to remove than newer tattoos with fresh ink. Similarly, black, brown, dark blue and green ink respond better to the laser tattoo removal than lighter or brighter colours.
Your consultant will be able to give you an idea of the timeline for your laser tattoo removal and results you should expect during your first consultation.
We are perfectionists and at our tattoo removal clinic we pride ourselves on our record of client satisfaction and tattoo removal results. You'll have to discuss your individual case with your tattoo removalist but qualifying clients are eligible for our removal guarantee when they commit to a full tattoo removal package. In these cases, if a tattoo is not removed in the number of sessions we initially quote then our clients receive one year of free tattoo removal at our Sydney clinic.
When you're considering joining the military you might be asking yourself whether you can have tattoos in the army. The Australian Defence Force has a strict policy on tattoos and body piercings. Tattoos and brands are prohibited in highly visible areas. For Navy candidates, tattoos are prohibited on the face, scalp, ears and neck. For Army prospects, tattoos are prohibited on the face, scalp, neck, ears and hands. Air Force candidates simply must not have obtaining tattoos on their faces.
Female Defence Force candidates are permitted to have tattooed eyebrows or lip tattooing to enhance the outline of the lips (providing it does not look unnatural).
Tattoos are generally permitted if they are not on these highly visible parts of the body, however, offensive tattoos that undermine the dignity and authority of the Australian Defence Force are never permitted.
Post-Treatment Care
We find that our clients appreciate our aftercare process and follow up. We've refined our post-treatment process and, after every session, big or small, our tattoo removal specialists will provide you with post-care instructions and check in with you via email to see how you are healing.
- After your treatment session is complete, one of our professional tattoo removal specialists will apply a cream to the affected area and use a simple dressing to protect the skin for around 24 hours.
- To allow as much ink as possible to be absorbed and expelled by your system between visits, we recommend spacing your tattoo removal sessions 8 weeks apart.
- We also recommend that you avoid wearing tight clothing over or around the tattoo in the time between treatments and for a little time after the entire process is finished. This will allow the skin to breathe and recover normally to prevent any extra irritation.
One common post-care complication you may experience is a darkening or lightening of the skin known as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. This occurs because the laser is changing not only the composition of the tattoo ink, but the melatonin in your surrounding skin. If this results after your tattoo removal, rest assured that your skin will return to a normal colour within 6 to 12 months of your treatments.
